It’s all about the graduates this month in London… first the CSM degree show and now Graduate Fashion Week, the world’s leading annual event for fashion graduates now on it’s last day of another spectacular show at Earls Court.
Graduate Fashion Week showcases over 1,000 graduates from influential universities in the UK and abroad, attracting over 20,000 guests each June with exhibitions from over 40 universities.
Having launched the careers of Christopher Bailey, Julien MacDonald and Stella McCartney this charity organisation founded in 1991 aims to unify UK and international universities and create a stronghold for the creative industries.
The 3 day event has seen a huge exhibition, over 22 catwalk shows, pop-up shops, live photo shoots, presentations, seminars and interactive talks from the likes of Nick Knight, Karen Millen and Henry Holland.
On Monday the International Show, partnered with Vogue Italia, saw showcases from over 16 universities worldwide including the Bunka fashion graduates (Japan) and Instituto Marangoni (Paris, Milan & London).
What’s really interesting this year is the emphasis that’s been placed on employment advice in the fashion industry. The careers page of the main website provides detailed advice on creating a successful portfolio, promoting yourself within the industry, knowing your rights as an intern and funding your own business.
Graduates were also able to upload their portfolios on Arts Thread before arriving to connect with industry professionals.
Official sponsors include George at Asda, Barclays, Karen Millen, L’Oreal, Mulberry, Per Aquum, Stuart Peters, Tynant, Nordens and Green & Blacks with partnerships from Arts Thread, Drapers Jobs, Fashion Monitor and Propress.
Previous award categories have included Mulberry Accessories, Per Aquum Marketing, Barclays New Business Idea and Karen Millen Portfolio. Look out for this year’s winners on the official GFW website.
